With scientists recently confirming that the pandemic of 1918 was likely caused by bird flu that migrated to human to human transmission, you may want to look at this timely book, The Threat of Pandemic Influenza: Are We Ready? It is a collection of papers delivered at a workshop sponsored by the the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Forum on Microbial Threats. There is a chapter specifically devoted to avian influenza. If you don't have time for the entire book, you may at least want to read the 56 page Summary and Assessment Chapter.
