Book: Divorce

Britney and K-Fed...Nick and Jessica...Brad and Jen! Entertainment shows swarm when the marriages of hollywood couples come to an end. But the effects of divorce in general are not highly publicized. Two professors of psychology, Alison Clarke-Stewart and Cornelia Brentano, wrote a comprehensive book about the topic called Divorce: Causes and Consequences. The authors combine theory, research, and examples that explore topics from the history and trends of divorce to the postdivorce adjustments for adults and children. Some statistics may surprise you, such as: "the divorce rate is the lowest it has been in thirty years" and "the early years of marriage have the highest divorce risk" (pg 17). Whether divorce has touched you personally or you're studying the social sciences, this authoritiative book is worth the read.

Book: Social Capital in the City

Social networks are crucial if you live in a big city like Philly. Richardson Dilworth, an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Drexel, compiled ten essays about the importance of urban social networks in Social Capital in the City: Community and Civic Life in Philadelphia. This book is the first volume of its kind to examine social capital in a wide range of contexts over time periods in one city. From education and neighborhood life to voter behavior and political activism, the wide range of topics reflect the complexity of urban life. Social Capital is a valuable resource for people interested in sociology, urban theory and local studies.
